Monthly Archives: December 2012
When the song of the angels is stilled,
When the star in the sky is gone,
When the kings and princes are home,
When the shepherds are back with their flock,
The work of Christmas begins:
To find the lost,
To heal the broken,
To feed the hungry,
To release the prisoner,
To rebuild the nations,
To bring peace among brothers,
To make music in the heart.
We just wanted to take this moment before Christmas to say thank you for all that you give and do to support the work of the Gainesville Catholic Worker House. We are so grateful to each one of you: for the food and jackets and blankets and art supplies donated; for the time you spend helping out at the cafe and the microfarm and Art for All; for your prayers and kind words and hugs; for your generosity and the financial gifts which keep us going; for everything you do and everything you are.
As you know, we rely on the contributions of friends and families and our live-in community to be able to financially support the work of the house. No one here is paid; we receive no government assistance or grants; all of what is given goes to support the functioning of the house and our projects. If you’re in a position to do so and can help us this holiday season, we would greatly appreciate it. We have always functioned within “an economy of grace,” trusting that what is needed will be provided. We are NOT a tax-exempt organization, so we know that any gift you give is given at a personal sacrifice. We thank you for whatever you can give.
Have a peaceful and blessed holiday
All of us at the Green House
PIZZAS NEEDED FOR WEDNESDAY’S CAFE: So far we only have about 10 pizzas promised for the cafe on Wednesday (that includes the minimum 6 we make here at the house). If you can make a homemade pizza or buy one from one of our local pizzerias (Big Lou’s, Satchel’s, Leonarado’s, Five Star, Italian Gator, Mamma Mia, etc.), we would be so grateful! It has become a tradition that we do homemade (or locally-made) pizzas for the last cafe of each semester. We typically serve between 20-25 pizzas, so we need A LOT of help securing enough pizza pies. Pizzas can be dropped off anytime between 11:30am and 1:30pm. So RSVP if you can bring a pizza pie for this Wednesday’s cafe, December 12, and let us know what time you’ll be dropping it off!
COMMUNITY PRAYER AND POTLUCK: This Sunday, December 16, from 4-7pm, we’ll be hosting a community prayer service and potluck here at the Gainesville Catholic Worker House. A small group of friends have been meeting once-a-month for an intimate, communal prayer service at various folks’ homes. We follow the prayer service with a potluck meal. Everyone is welcome to attend. We start to gather at 4pm, with prayer beginning at 4:30pm, and meal immediately following.
OUR TAMRA IS GETTING MARRIED! We’re so excited that Tamra Rich, a member of our community for the past 4-5 years, and a live-in member last year, will be getting married to a wonderful young man Ben Travers, who some of y’all may remember as our photographer for the GCW House Portrait project last year. They’re getting married on Friday, so we hope y’all will keep them in your prayers. If you want to leave notes for them, feel free to leave comments on the GCW Facebook page and we’ll be sure to direct Tamra and Ben to check out your comments!
ART FOR ALL ITEMS STILL FOR SALE: If you weren’t able to come last week or during the party to check out all the great gifts that were made at Art for All this year, you still have one more chance! Come by anytime between 1-5pm from now through Friday, or to the Community Prayer and Potluck on Sunday between 4-7pm. All of the items which are left are still on display and someone will be here during those times to assist you in anything you’d like to pick up as a gift for someone you love. Thanks for your support!
THANKS FOR THE HELP AT THE ADVENT PARTY: To everyone who could make it for the Advent Party on Saturday, we thank you! It was a grand affair with around 75-100 folks dropping by for music, treats, and to honor Dave and Gloria Chynoweth and Alphonso Clarke. Thanks to everyone who brought food! You can see the photos down below or click here to see them on Flickr.
HOUSE CLOSED BETWEEN DECEMBER 17 AND JANUARY 6: We’ll be on break from December 17 through Epiphany, January 6. No projects or ministries take place during that time. Looking forward to seeing you in the New Year!
ADVENT PARTY AND ART FOR ALL SALE: This Saturday, December 8th, we’ll be hosting our Advent party at the Green House to thank everyone and celebrate the season with all of our friends. We hope you can join us! Everyone is invited to get together to celebrate the end of another semester, and we’ll have all of the items which were made at Art for All on display and available for sale for folks who want to pick up a little gift if they see something they like. We ask folks who come to bring some food or drink to share if possible! The party will begin at 4pm and go through until 8pm. Hope you’ll come and join us!
HONORING THE CHYNOWETHS AND ALPHONSO CLARKE: At the Advent party on Saturday, we’ll be honoring Gloria and Dave Chynoweth and Alphonso Clarke for all that they have done for the GCW over the years. Gloria and Dave’s presence, support and influence have been there from the beginning and we’re so gratefu for all that they are and all that they have done to make the GCW what it is today. Al was one of our early community members and helped to hold the house together during a very difficult time, the years after Kelli’s son Ben was diagnosed with leukemia. Al was an anchor during that time and we’re forever grateful for his presence and leadership during that time. Come to the party and show your thanks for Gloria and Dave and Al!
ROUNDTABLE ON THURSDAY: On Thursday at 6:30pm, we’ll have a low-key Roundtable and Potluck Dinner. It will be the last Roundtable of the semester, and we’ll begin our meal with a short Advent prayer and then just enjoy one another’s company over dinner. Come and join us if you can!
GET READY FOR NEXT WEEK’S PIZZA EXTRAVAGANZA V: It has become a tradition that we do homemade (or locally-made) pizzas for the last cafe of each semester. The last cafe for this semester will be Wednesday, December 12th, from 12:30-3:30pm. We typically serve between 20-25 pizzas, so we need A LOT of help securing enough pizza pies. If you can make a homemade pizza (or 2 or 3!) or purchase a pizza (or 2 or more!) from one of our local pizzerias (Big Lou’s, Satchel’s, Leonardo’s, et. al.), please let us know. We’ve started the list and we would love to add your name to it! So RSVP if you can bring a pie for next Wednesday’s cafe, December 12!
