Sugarcane Sale and Superbowl Gathering

A couple more things to add to the weekly GCW update that was sent out yesterday:

 Sugarcane Sale: Jade Allen from Black Acres Microfarm has some sugar cane stalks to sell.  They are $1.50 a piece or 2 for $2.  All proceeds go to support the Gainesville Catholic Worker.  So, if you’ve ever wanted to have some sugar cane of your own, stop by sometime this week, anytime the house is open for our usual activities, or contact gvillecw@yahoo.com to arrange an alternate time.

Superbowl Gathering: Following The Open Table community prayer service this Sunday 2/2, we are going to be having a little Superbowl gathering at the Green House.  So join us at 4pm for prayer, or stop by afterwards.   If you can, please bring some Superbowl-type snacks to share (but come anyway!).

Email us at gvillecw@yahoo.com if you have any questions.

QUOTATION OF THE WEEK:

O God,
let something essential and joyful happen in me now. something like the blooming of hope and faith,
like a grateful heart,
like a surge of awareness,
of how precious each moment is,
that now, not next time,
now is the occasion
to take off my shoes,
to see every bush afire,
to leap and whirl with neighbor,
to gulp the air as sweet wine…

Let Something Essential Happen to Me

O God,
let something essential happen to me,
something more than interesting
or entertaining,
or thoughtful.

O God,
let something essential happen to me,
something awesome,
something real.
Speak to my condition, Lord,
and change me somewhere inside where it matters,
a change that will burn and tremble and heal
and explode me into tears
or laughter or love that throbs or screams
or keeps its terrible, cleansing silence
and dares the dangerous deeds.
Let something happen in me which is my real self, God.

O God,
let something essential and passionate happen in me
now. Strip me of my illusions of self-sufficiency,
of my proud sophistications,
of my inflated assumptions of knowledge
and leave me shivering as Adam or Eve
before the miracle of the natural–
before the miracle of this earth
that nurtures me as a mother
and delights me as a lover;
the miracle of my body
that breathes and moves,
hungers and digests,
sees and hears,
that works the most amazing messages
of what and when and how,
coded and curled in every cell
and that dares to speak the confronting word.

O God,
let something essential and joyful happen in me now.
something like the blooming of hope and faith,
like a grateful heart,
like a surge of awareness,
of how precious each moment is,
that now, not next time,
now is the occasion
to take off my shoes,
to see every bush afire,
to leap and whirl with neighbor,
to gulp the air as sweet wine
until I’ve drunk enough
to dare to speak the tender word:
“Thank you”;
“I love you”;
“You’re beautiful”;
“Let’s live forever beginning now”;
and “I’m a fool for Christ’s sake.”

QUOTATION OF THE WEEK:

Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that. Hate multiplies hate, violence multiplies violence, and toughness multiplies toughness in a descending spiral of destruction.

–Martin Luther King, Jr.

Christmas 1957, in a sermon about Jesus’ command to love one’s enemies.

QUOTATION OF THE WEEKThis has been shared many times before, but we thought it worth sharing again, as we wrap up the Christmas season:

When the song of the angels is stilled,
When the star in the sky is gone,
When the kings and princes are home,
When the shepherds are back with their flock,
The work of Christmas begins:

To find the lost,
To heal the broken,
To feed the hungry,
To release the prisoner,
To rebuild the nations,
To bring peace among brothers,
To make music in the heart.
