Eco-Stewards Roundtable this Thursday, and all the week’s news

ROUNDTABLE THIS THURSDAY! Please join us this Thursday, May 22 from 6:30-8pm at the Green House for our monthly potluck (beginning at 6:30) and roundtable discussion (beginning at 7pm).  Members of the Eco-Stewards Program will be sharing a presentation with us as part of their immersion experience.  The Eco-Stewards Program is a grassroots organization building a community of young adults (ages 20-30) who want to explore the connection between their faith and the call to environmental stewardship.  Eco-Stewards can participate in annual, weeklong place-based programs as well as summer internships at PCUSA camps and affiliated organic farms.  The Eco-Stewards program is supported by Presbyterians for Earth Care, Presbyterian Church Camp and Conference Association, and Presbyterian Church (USA) Environmental Ministries.  The Eco-Stewards will be sharing with us about their work and their “eco-journeys.” We are happy to welcome them to Gainesville.  If you are able to bring a dish to share, that would be helpful, but if not, come anyway!

METANOIA SEMESTER:  As this school year draws to a close and we consider our options for the future, we are realizing we need more committed live-in community members in order to move forward.  In the past, GCW has offered internships called a “Metanoia semester” to folks interested in an immersion experience of living and working at the GCW, in order to learn more about what we are and why we do it.  If this is something that interests you for the fall or spring of next year, contact Daniel Loya to learn more, at 863-207-3670 or

GREEN HOUSE SUMMER HIATUSIn keeping with past GCW tradition, we will be taking a break for the summer to regroup and to prepare the House for a new school year.  Our last event for this school year will be Dorothy’s Café on Wednesday, June 4; the Green House will close after that.  We plan to re-open when the school year begins again in mid-August.  We do have some ideas for special projects over the summer, so watch for news about those soon!

In honor of our friends from Eco-Stewards, some words of wisdom about care for creation:

We do not need to plan or devise a “world of the future”; if we take care of the world of the present, the future will have received full justice from us. A good future is implicit in the soils, forests, grasslands, marshes, deserts, mountains, rivers, lakes, and oceans that we have now, and in the good things of human culture that we have now; the only valid “futurology” available to us is to take care of those things. We have no need to contrive and dabble at “the future of the human race”; we have the same pressing need that we have always had – to love, care for, and teach our children.

    Dear gainesville CWH,

I was wondering if the house or Art-for-All project is still in need of white bed sheets. I am doing some spring cleaning and have several that are extra and in good shape.

Are there other specific items the house is needing?

    Thank you!

    • Hi Liz,

Thanks for thinking of us! We do not need white bed sheets anymore, but perhaps there is another organization out there that could use some sheets in good shape?

As for other needs, some possibilities include things like toilet paper, dawn dish soap, bleach, wood floor cleaner, salt/pepper, and sugar. We can never have enough of these things.

      Thanks again!
