Thank you Eco-Stewards, Wrapping up for this school year, Pizza Cafe next week, and all this week’s news
Our weekly update is going out a day later than usual this week, due to the Memorial Day holiday. Look for our final weekly update of the school year this coming Monday, and more information about summer needs and projects soon.
THANK YOU, ECO-STEWARDS! A big thank you to Rev. Rob Mark and the entire Eco-Stewards group who visited us last week, and to our own Daniel Loya and Vickie Machado for connecting us with this group. The Eco-Stewards helped with serving at Dorothy’s Café last Wednesday. Then on Thursday we had a fantastic roundtable discussion with them, during which they shared more about how the Eco-Stewards program got its start, and some of the personal journeys of the participants. The Eco-Stewards Program is a wonderful ecumenical movement seeking to help young adults connect their faith with care for creation. If you would like to learn more, check out their website: http://ecostewardsprogram.wordpress.com/, or talk to Daniel or Vickie about it!
METANOIA SEMESTER: As this school year draws to a close and we consider our options for the future, we are realizing we need more committed live-in community members in order to move forward. In the past, GCW has offered internships called a “Metanoia semester” to folks interested in an immersion experience of living and working at the GCW, in order to learn more about what we are and why we do it. If this is something that interests you for the fall or spring of next year, contact Daniel Loya to learn more, at 863-207-3670 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
GREEN HOUSE SUMMER HIATUS: In keeping with past GCW tradition, we will be taking a break for the summer to regroup and to prepare the House for a new school year. We are scaling back a little bit this week, with coffee shops only on Monday and Friday. Our last event for this school year will be Dorothy’s Café on Wednesday, June 4; the Green House will close after that. We plan to re-open when the school year begins again in mid-August. We do have some ideas for special projects over the summer, so watch for news about those soon!
PIZZA CAFÉ JUNE 4: As mentioned above, our final Dorothy’s Café of the school year is next Wednesday, June 4. And in keeping with tradition, it will be a pizza café! We will need folks to help by bringing win pizzas—either homemade or from local places like Big Lou’s, Italian Gator, Five-Star, Satchell’s etc. We will also need folks to come help us prepare some more pizzas on site. Please let us know if you can bring a pizza either by emailing us at email@example.com, or by checking out our facebook event page and responding there with how many pizzas you can bring, and what kind. This week, May 28 will be a regular Dorothy’s Café, and we will still need volunteers for preparation and serving for that as well.
- Coffee Shops: Monday and Friday mornings from 7:30-9:30 AM
- Dorothy’s Café: On Wednesday with prep from 9:30 AM -12 PM, serving from 12:30-2:30 PM, and cleanup from 2:30-3:30 PM. Click here to sign up.
- Microfarm Morning: Thursday from 8:30-11:30 AM. Contact Jade Allen via email (firstname.lastname@example.org) or phone (352-337-0817) for questions &/or directions.
MAY THANK YOU’S: Our continued thanks to Porters Community Farm, Black Acres Microfarm, and the farmers at the 441 Farmers’ Market for all the produce they have donated to GCW this month, and to Doreen Starr for the locally raised eggs. Thank you also to Strongtree Organic Coffee Roasters for donating coffee for our morning coffee shops, and to Henderson and Daughter Plants and Produce for selling us citrus at a deep discount. We are so grateful for everyone who supports the work of the Green House!
QUOTATION OF THE WEEK:
In honor of our friends from Eco-Stewards, once again some words of wisdom about care for creation:
Creation is not a property, which we can rule over at will; or, even less, is the property of only a few: Creation is a gift, it is a wonderful gift that God has given us, so that we care for it and we use it for the benefit of all, always with great respect and gratitude.
–Pope Francis, Audience May 21, 2014
